Wild Wood Whittling (1 day course)

Course Dates:
Saturday 23rd March 2019

Time: 10am - finish 5 / 5.30pm

Price: £60 per person

Max 7 students - Minimum age: 14/15

This is a beginner’s class: no experience in using wood, knives or axes is necessary. This is a good introduction to working with green wood and becoming comfortable with edge tools, and it will enable you to work on your own at home.

During the day you will learn how to take small wood from the wood or hedgerow, and how to make this into small, useful objects, or puzzles and toys. We will use hand saws, axes, knives and drills. No power tools will be used. Tuition will be given in how to use the tools safely and efficiently, as well as advice on how to sharpen them. The emphasis will be on using simple everyday tools to make interesting, useful, everyday stuff.

You can learn to make some of the following: coat hooks from branches, flying propellers, arrow-through-washer puzzles, wooden gypsy flowers, and spatulas. It might not be possible to make everything on this list owing to time constraints, but if you do not, you will probably see some else making it.

You will learn:
• How to use an axe and knife safely. Step by step tuition is given in each axe and knife technique.
• What wood to use and what part of the tree to use.
• How to split and shape the billet of wood, using an axe.
• How to refine and finish the roughed out blank using a range of knives.
• How to finish the wood: a cut finish versus a sanded finish; and what to oils or wax to finish your items with.
• You will be able to try out various commercially available knives and axes.
• We will also talk about and practise how to keep your knife sharp.

Other woodworking courses include the Spoon Carving 1 day course
