On this course you will be introduced to the basics of stake and strand techniques. the main method used in this country to make traditional baskets such as those used for fruit picking, to transport produce to market, and for shopping baskets. A round basket with a central handle, suitable for harvesting vegetables or fruit, will be made over the course of the weekend.

You will be learning to manage the material and get to grips with weaving a three dimensional form, learning the different parts of the basket and the weaves associated with them, as well as learning to use the tools.

A ‘slow’ craft, the skills take time to acquire and for strength to build up in your hands. Making a basket will completely engage your mind and body as you focus on the different stages of base, siding, border and handle.

You will learn:
- the basics of stake and strand basketry techniques
- to work with natural ‘bark on’ willow
- about material preparation; grading, soaking, mellowing willow for use
- to use the tools
- the relationship between the size of material and the possibilities of patterning and form
...and you will take away your own beautiful, sustainable basket ready for gathering produce!

All materials are included, plus you'll leave with lots of things to take home.

Course numbers are restricted to a maximum of 10 people so there will be plenty of time for your questions and one-to-one attention.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided from produce grown at the Husbandry School, naturally.
